“Terrible Beauty“—focusing on the tension between nostalgic, romanticized ideas and images of landscapes and the multiple predicaments and crises in today’s context of climate change.

While landscapes were not long ago considered innocuous to the point of irrelevance, the artistic take on the genre has fundamentally changed and become politicized in the context of human-caused threats to the planet. Biodiversity and extinction of species, tourism, glacier meltdown, migration, but also resistance and digitally created landscapes—gmunden.photo 2024 addresses a range of very different thematic areas.
Making “Terrible Beauty” this year’s motto, gmunden.photo2024 shows itself to be at once an artistic appeal for a livable and climate-friendly future and an expression of the unbroken love for “beautiful landscapes,” which continue to fascinate us, cultivated and captured by the medium of photography.
